First Question Hour in TN Assembly Since TVK Government Takes Office

Chennai – Thursday marks the first Question Hour in the Tamil Nadu Assembly since the TVK coalition formed the government. The session follows a short break for the Eid‑e‑Milad‑un‑Nabi holiday, and it re‑opens the state’s 2026‑27 budget deliberations.

The General Budget and the Agriculture Budget were tabled on August 5 and 6, with subsequent debates spread over three days. Finance Minister Maria Wilson and Agriculture Minister Vinod responded on August 12, outlining financial priorities and farm‑related schemes. From August 17 onward, legislators examined grant demands from 27 ministries, completing the first round of departmental discussions.

Only five questions have been scheduled for the opening Question Hour, a figure lower than the typical ten, reflecting delays in departmental feedback. Sources indicate that ministries are still compiling comprehensive answers to members’ queries.

After the Question Hour, attention is likely to shift to a contentious proposal concerning the Utti boat house, which a BJP legislator has asked the government to hand over to a private operator. The issue is expected to spark a detailed conversation on the stewardship of public tourism assets and the conditions required for private sector involvement.
