Fire Support Group Established as Common Long‑Range Firepower Pool
The Indian Army has created a dedicated Fire Support Group (FSG) to serve as a centralized pool of long‑range firepower for its Integrated Battle Groups (IBGs). Commanded by a two‑star Major General, the FSG brings together artillery, multiple‑launch rocket systems, precision strike weapons and state‑of‑the‑art surveillance assets.
The purpose of the FSG is to provide immediate, accurate fire support to any IBG that requests it, eliminating the time‑consuming process of pulling fire assets from separate formations. By integrating these capabilities under a single headquarters, the army can allocate firepower more efficiently across the western and eastern fronts.
The FSG’s inventory includes long‑range guns, rocket launchers capable of delivering precision payloads, and advanced targeting systems that feed real‑time intelligence to both ground and aerial units. This arrangement mirrors the combined‑arms brigade model adopted by China, where fire support is similarly centralized to improve responsiveness.
With the FSG in place, each IBG—comprising infantry, armour, artillery and aviation—can focus on maneuver while relying on the FSG for heavy fire missions. The new structure is expected to shorten decision cycles, increase the lethality of Indian forces, and enhance overall border security.
