Fire Brings Down 150 Shops in Vasco; Government Stays Vigilant

A major fire at a market in Vasco, a port town in Goa, destroyed more than 150 shops, prompting the state government to step up its response. Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant said the situation is now fully under control and that the government is standing alongside the affected traders.

In a message posted on X, Sawant said authorities are taking every necessary precaution to safeguard traders, residents and members of the public following the unfortunate blaze at the Sunday market. He called on people to cooperate with officials and comply with the safety directions being issued, stressing that these measures are aimed at protecting public safety.

The Chief Minister stated that the relevant departments have been directed to make a comprehensive assessment of the losses caused by the fire. Senior administrative officials, including the Chief Secretary, are visiting the affected area to gauge the situation on the ground. Based on this assessment, a framework is being prepared to provide appropriate financial compensation to the victims of the fire.

Speaking on the matter, Sawant said, “The fire at the Sunday market in Vasco is now fully under control. All essential precautionary measures are being implemented to ensure everyone’s safety, especially that of traders and residents in the affected zone.”

He added, “I appeal to all to cooperate with the officials and abide by the safety directions. These measures are entirely precautionary and have been taken in the interest of public safety.” The Chief Minister said the government is monitoring the situation closely and considers the safety and welfare of the affected people its foremost responsibility.

The blaze broke out on Thursday at a market in Vasco, a port city in the state.
