Female Participation Tops Gender Index as Indian Higher Education Expands

Delhi, July 8 – The latest All‑India Higher Education Survey reveals that women have taken the lead in the nation’s expanding tertiary education system. Of the 45 million total enrolments recorded for 2023‑24, 22.4 million are women, marking a 42 percent increase from the 15.7 million recorded a decade earlier.

The Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) for the 18‑23 age group climbed from 23.7 % in 2014‑15 to roughly 30 % in 2023‑24. Female GER outstripped the male figure, reaching 31.2 %.

The Gender Parity Index (GPI) held steady at 1.08, staying above the parity threshold of 1.0 for the seventh consecutive year. This persistent edge indicates that women are not only catching up but are now outpacing men in accessing higher‑education opportunities.

Beyond gender, the data paints a broader picture of inclusion. Scheduled Caste enrolments rose from 4.607 million to 6.972 million, Scheduled Tribe numbers grew from 1.641 million to 2.883 million, and Other Backward Classes (OBC) increased from 11.3 million to 18 million.

STEM disciplines drew 10.2 million students, with women constituting 44 % of this pool, underscoring a shifting mindset toward technical careers.

The teaching cadre also reflects this trend: 1.732 million faculty members were employed in 2023‑24, and women accounted for nearly 45 % of the workforce, up from 5.69 million to 7.78 million female teachers over the last ten years.

Policy makers cite these figures as evidence that the New Education Policy’s emphasis on gender equity and social inclusion is bearing fruit, and that the higher‑education sector is moving toward a more balanced and diverse future.
