Fear Grips Guwahati as Victim's Family Demands Strict Action

Guwahati, November 1: The family of Bhudev Bharali, a native of Barpeta in Assam who was murdered in Guwahati, has raised alarm over its security. The victim's daughter has urged a fair and quick investigation, severe punishment for those guilty, and police protection.

The murder has left the family shaken. Speaking to journalists, Bhudev's daughter said that Guwahati attracts people for jobs, sports and education, and that people arrive there for every type of work. "When a man can openly fire on local residents and then receive king-like treatment and protection, locals do not feel safe. That is the reason people here feel vulnerable."

She described a growing atmosphere of terror in the area. Residents are now afraid to leave their houses, and many are worried about continuing their businesses. "Hotel owners too are living in fear. If that is the case, how will people from outside come? Tourists will be afraid to visit."

The daughter also spoke about the impact on Assam's image. She noted that students from the state already face mocking remarks elsewhere, calling them jungle or Chinese. "If locals are not safe, tourists will be even less safe. This is a big city that receives visitors from all over the world. Action on such issues must be taken immediately so that criminals fear the law."

Demanding harsh justice, she said, "Such incidents will make people hesitate to visit Guwahati, and they will say open firing takes place there. Action should come as early as possible. We want an encounter of the accused. We are demanding capital punishment."

The family says local residents will not regain a sense of security until those responsible are punished severely. It has appealed to the state government and police administration to take the case on a fast track and deliver justice.
