Fasting Rules for Shardiy Navratri: Allowed Grains, Dairy, Fruits and Prohibited Foods
Shardiy Navratri, observed from October 11 this year, requires devotees to fast with a focus on light, plant‑based nourishment. Acceptable foods include a variety of fresh fruits—banana, apple, papaya, orange and pomegranate—which supply quick energy and hydration. Dairy items such as milk, dahi, paneer and ghee are also part of the permitted list, helping keep the digestive system satisfied. Special flours like kuttu (buckwheat), singhara (water chestnut) and samak (barnyard millet) replace wheat and regular rice; they can be cooked into rotis, cheelas, or simple khichdi. Sabudana is popular for its versatility in sweet and savory preparations. Additional allowed items are potatoes, sweet potatoes, almonds, walnuts, cashews, raisins and rock salt. Strict bans apply to onions, garlic, wheat, ordinary rice, lentils, meat, alcohol and any heavily fried or processed snacks. The fast also calls for mental restraint—avoiding anger, false speech and negative thoughts, while dedicating time to Durga worship and recitation of sacred texts.
