Farmers Union Calls for Rally Despite Police House Arrests in Delhi

Delhi – The Indian Farmers Union (Bkku) announced on Saturday that its members will continue with the scheduled rally at Jantar Mantar, even after police placed several top officials under house arrest. The police intervention came as the union was mobilising thousands of farmers from across the state for a high‑visibility protest aimed at pressing the central government for actionable concessions.

National spokesperson Pawan Khatana, who was among those detained, said the police had tried to halt the protest by confining leaders to their homes. Khatana urged the grassroots activists to meet at the union’s camp office near Chapraugh on the Yamuna Expressway on 10 October, where a coordinated plan would be finalized. He emphasized that the movement is rooted in the constitutional right to peaceful assembly and will not be derailed by intimidation.

District President Manoj Mavi convened a strategic session at the union headquarters in Biroundi village, with hundreds of farmers from neighboring hamlets in attendance. The discussion covered final logistics, messaging, and ways to maintain non‑violent discipline. Mavi clarified that the union’s agenda is strictly about safeguarding farmers' livelihoods and not about confronting any political party. He also reported that attempts were made to place additional district officials under house arrest, an act he called a violation of democratic norms.

The union has appealed to the Delhi administration to respect civil liberties and allow the protest to proceed without unlawful restrictions. While police actions have intensified, the leaders assure that the rally will move forward, underscoring the resolve of the farming community.
