Farmers left to rot: Congress leader harshly critiques Fadnavis administration

A sweeping drought has paralyzed Maharashtra’s agricultural heartland, leaving harvests to wither and families to worry about food security during the upcoming festive period.

Speaking to the press, Congress state president Harshvardhan Sapkal denounced the Mahayuti government for what he described as “complete indifference” to the plight of cultivators. He asserted that farmers are being forced to plant on lands that have already been rendered infertile by the water crisis.

Sapkal pointed out that the promised monetary assistance has not been credited to the farmers’ bank accounts. He claimed that while officials keep repeating that the relief process is “underway,” the actual funds remain absent, and the earlier promise of a loan waiver has turned out to be a mere illusion.

At a recent drought‑focused briefing, an administrative officer was caught watching a video on his mobile device, and a ruling‑party MP appeared visibly nervous. The congress leader likened this scene to previous incidents where ministers were filmed indulging in mobile games inside the legislative chamber.

Regarding Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s latest statement, Sapkal suggested the chief minister’s anxiety stems from Rahul Gandhi’s expanding “students’ echo” movement. He added a sardonic wish for Fadnavis’s mental health to improve soon.

The congress also accused the BJP‑led coalition of employing a colonial‑style “divide‑and‑rule” tactic, exacerbating reservation‑related tensions among Maratha, OBC, tribal and VJNT communities. As the state gears up for elections, the opposition warns that the worsening agrarian crisis and sluggish aid distribution will dominate voter concerns. No official reply has been received from the ruling administration.
