Farmers in Erode Get Relief as State Releases Water from Bhavani Sagar

Erode’s farming community welcomed a breakthrough after the Tamil Nadu government announced a fifteen‑day water release from the Bhavani Sagar Dam. The move came after a prolonged period of uncertainty, during which the reservoir’s level stayed below the critical 60‑foot mark.

Local growers had staged a peaceful protest near the district collector’s office, demanding that the state intervene to prevent loss of standing crops. Their concerns were echoed by agricultural experts who warned that delayed irrigation could lead to reduced yields and financial strain for thousands of families.

The collector, Kandasamy, confirmed that the water will flow through the Lower Bhavani main canal and the odd‑numbered sluice gates of the Chenna Samudram distribution network. This coordinated release is expected to benefit about 1,300 acres of cultivated land, providing much‑needed moisture for the upcoming planting cycle.

While the immediate impact is positive, farmers have called for transparent monitoring to ensure that the water reaches the terminal points of the canal system without diversion or loss. The state has pledged to keep a close watch on water levels and adjust future releases based on rainfall and inflow data.
