Farmers’ Debt Waiver and Rice Procurement Push Featured in DMK Appeal

Chennai, September 20 – DMK senior figure and Vriddhachalam MLA Premlata Vijaykanta used a Sunday address to spotlight the growing anguish of Tamil Nadu’s farming community. She referenced the ongoing demonstrations in Samyarpuram and demanded a comprehensive waiver of agricultural indebtedness. Citing data that the Tiruchi district has already forgiven ₹247.15 crore for 50,779 farmers, she urged the state to replicate the measure for all eligible cultivators.

The lawmaker also pressed the administration to speed up the purchase of rain‑damaged paddy from regions such as Tirunelveli and Vriddhachalam, warning that delays could inflict further financial strain on growers. She linked this agricultural relief to broader public welfare, noting that a stable farming sector reduces rural distress and supports food security.

In addition to farmer concerns, Premlata raised alarms over a series of violent crimes, including a double murder at Shivganga and killings in Madurai and Krishnagiri, demanding rapid investigations and stringent punishments. She called for enhanced mosquito control to curb dengue and other vector‑borne diseases, emphasizing the need for well‑equipped hospitals and immediate health responses for campus outbreaks like those reported at Anna University.

She also highlighted the plight of Pattinam fishermen, the necessity for robust security during Vinayaka Chaturthi processions, and the urgency of securing Tamil Nadu’s fair share of Cauvery water from Karnataka. Power outages across the state were described as unacceptable, with a request for immediate remedial action.

Premlata concluded that a coordinated, time‑bound approach to these diverse challenges is essential for maintaining public trust and ensuring the state's socio‑economic stability.
