Extensive Damage to Homes and Vehicles as Rajouri Floods Surge

The flash floods that hit Rajouri and Poonch districts late Sunday caused widespread destruction to residential and commercial properties. At least forty‑seven homes in Surankot, Poonch, and twenty shops in Rajouri reported severe damage or complete loss.

In addition to the loss of life, the high‑velocity waters carried away nearly twenty automobiles and battered another forty, leaving many stranded on flooded streets. Power supply to key areas such as Thanna Mandi, Darhal and Surankot was interrupted after numerous poles and transformers were toppled.

Rescue operations, coordinated by the army, police, SDRF and local volunteers, have so far recovered eight bodies while eight individuals remain missing. Three victims were transported to hospitals with serious injuries.

The floods also forced the displacement of dozens of livestock, with many cattle and buffaloes swept away by the swollen Suran River and its tributaries.

Chief Minister Umar Abdullah convened a senior officials' meeting in Jammu, directing all departments to expedite relief measures for the victims. He has been in constant contact with field commanders, receiving updates every thirty minutes.

The disaster management teams are continuing to search for missing persons, assess structural damage, and provide emergency supplies to affected families. Weather forecasts suggest further heavy rainfall in the region, prompting authorities to keep evacuation warnings in place.
