Extended Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme Offers Relief to Smallholders
The Prime Minister Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM‑KISAN) scheme has been officially extended to the year 2031, delivering a welcome boost to India's smallholder farmers. The policy provides a direct cash transfer of INR 6,000 per eligible farmer each year, divided into three installments to coincide with key agricultural phases.
Farmers from Chhindwara district in Madhya Pradesh gathered to voice their appreciation for the government's decision. They emphasized that the grant plays a crucial role in meeting day‑to‑day farming costs, especially for those with limited access to formal credit.
"This extension is a significant step toward financial stability for our families," said Basant Patel, a cultivator who has benefited from the scheme since its inception. "We thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his administration for listening to our needs."
Another farmer, Lalit Singh, highlighted that the continuity of the scheme eliminates the fear of a sudden funding gap. "When we heard that the programme might end in 2027, we were worried. The extension reassures us that the support will continue, allowing us to invest in better seeds and fertilizers," he explained.
Policy experts note that the prolonged cash assistance can help mitigate seasonal income fluctuations, reduce reliance on high‑interest informal lenders, and encourage the adoption of modern agricultural techniques. The move is expected to reinforce the government's broader agenda of enhancing farmer welfare and sustaining rural growth.
