Experts Praise Model Nikahnama for Adding Safeguards to Muslim Bridal Agreements

Legal experts and community leaders have applauded the Uttarakhand Model Nikahnama for introducing robust safeguards into Muslim marriage contracts. The draft, prepared by the state’s Waqf Board, is set to be discussed before the Uniform Civil Code panel.

Dr. Shalini Ali, national convenor of the Muslim Forum, explained that the contract is more than a ceremonial document—it is a binding agreement where a bride can insert clauses protecting her financial and personal interests.

She noted that traditional practices often see women signing without a thorough read‑through, leaving them exposed to future disputes. The Model Nikahnama addresses this gap by mandating clear language and optional protective clauses.

The proposal will be presented after consultations with ulema, ensuring that religious tenets are respected while aligning with contemporary legal standards. If approved, the template could be replicated nationwide, offering a uniform framework for Muslim marriages.

Dr. Ali also called out detractors, labeling them as vested‑interest clerics who misuse religious rhetoric. She reaffirmed that Islam accords women a dignified status, and the Model Nikahnama is a practical step toward realising that promise.
