Ex‑TMC Legislator Nirmal Ghosh Denied Bail, Held for Two Weeks in RG Kar Crime

The district court in Baripada ordered former Trinamool Congress representative Nirmal Ghosh to remain in judicial custody for fourteen days on Friday, refusing his bail plea. Ghosh is accused of participating in a plot surrounding the August 2024 rape and murder of a junior female doctor employed at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata.

Authorities claim Ghosb was one of three principal actors who facilitated a swift burial of the victim at a Panihati cremation ground, contravening established post‑mortem guidelines to thwart a second autopsy.

After evading police for several days, Ghosh was captured in Odisha and presented before the Baripada court. His lawyer appealed for release, arguing that the 78‑year‑old suffers from multiple age‑related illnesses and requires continuous medical attention.

The state counsel highlighted the seriousness of the charge sheet and opposed the bail, leading the judge to reject the petition and order a 14‑day detention.

The incident has sparked political outrage. Opposition leader Shubhendu Ahiri, during a Panihati function on August 8, urged the Baripada Police Commissionerate to reopen an inquiry into what he described as a "planned" and "rushed" burial.

A fresh FIR lodged by the victim's father at Khardah police station named Ghosh, local TMC ward councilor Somnath Dey, and neighbour Sanjiv Banerjee as suspects. While Banerjee has been arrested, Dey remains at large. The case continues to attract media attention and legal scrutiny.
