From Ashoka Chakra to Republic: Evolution of the Indian National Flag

The Indian national flag did not attain its current appearance overnight. Early proposals, such as the 1931 design suggested by freedom fighter Pingali Venkayya, featured a spinning wheel (charkha) at the centre. Subsequent revisions replaced the charkha with the Ashoka Chakra, underscoring the nation’s commitment to justice, progress and continuous motion. On 22 July 1947, the Constituent Assembly gave its final approval, and the flag became the emblem of independent India. After the Republic’s birth in 1950, the tricolor transitioned from representing the Dominion of India to symbolising the Republic of India, retaining its core values while reinforcing the democratic ethos of the country.
