Erode’s Bavani Sagar Reservoir Gains Over Two Feet in Two Days, Outflow Climbs

The Bavani Sagar Dam in Erode district saw its water level rise by more than two feet within a two‑day window, thanks to recent rain in its catchment zones. Outflow measurements jumped from 2,436 cusec on October 8 to about 3,488 cusec on October 9.

At 6 p.m. on October 7 the level was recorded at 54.38 feet; by the same time on October 9 it reached 56.59 feet. This increase follows a prolonged dry spell that had forced the reservoir down to roughly 50 feet.

The dam, which can hold water up to 105 feet, is fed by the Bhavani River from the Nilgiri hills and the Moyar River descending from the Gudalur hills. The recent rainfall replenished both sources, reversing months of declining storage.

Farmers, who rely heavily on the dam for irrigation, welcomed the rise. The lower water level had exposed the reservoir bed, allowing silt removal, which further improves storage efficiency. With irrigation releases currently on hold, the reservoir is now retaining more water, setting the stage for a gradual return to normal levels.
