In a somber moment for Indian politics, veteran Congress leader Mohsina Kidwai passed away early Wednesday at 93. The three-time parliamentarian from Meerut succumbed at 4 AM in a Delhi hospital. Her funeral procession will depart from her Noida home in Sector 40 at 3 PM.

Tributes have flooded in, with Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi expressing heartfelt condolences on social media. Gandhi wrote on X: ‘Deeply saddened by the news of former Union Minister Mohsina Kidwai ji’s passing. She was a devoted Congress leader whose life exemplified selfless service. Her poise and accomplishments empowered countless women. Condolences to her family and well-wishers.’

Kharge posted: ‘The Congress family mourns the loss of Smt. Mohsina Kidwai ji, a towering figure who served the nation for over six decades. From Lok Sabha to Rajya Sabha, and as a key Congress Working Committee member, she steered the party through challenges. This is a profound loss. My thoughts are with her loved ones. Om Shanti.’

Kidwai, born in Barabanki on New Year’s Day 1932, rose through the ranks with remarkable tenacity. Victorious in Meerut Lok Sabha polls in 1978, 1980, and 1984, she later represented Chhattisgarh in Rajya Sabha. Trusted by the Gandhis, she managed crucial ministries including Health, Housing, Tourism, and Aviation.

Beyond government roles, she chaired the Haj Committee and held pivotal party positions like General Secretary and election committee member. Kidwai’s career, spanning decades of turbulence and triumph, redefined women’s roles in politics. Her passing leaves a void, but her contributions endure.
