Emergency response underway after Ganga bank fails in Bhagalpur’s Raghopur area

The Ganga river’s rising tide breached the Kajikoria‑Raghopur embankment near Bhagalpur on the early hours of Monday, creating a 50‑metre gap that swiftly directed floodwater into the Raghopur locality. The area includes the residence of Energy Minister Shailesh Kumar, known as Bulo Mandal, whose home was instantly flooded.

District officials, including the Deputy Commissioner and senior disaster‑management officers, arrived on the ground and launched an emergency protocol. Flood‑fighting crews have begun reinforcing the embankment while water‑pumping units are deployed to reduce depth in residential streets.

A nearby farmer recounted the moment: “We were sleeping on a cot in the fields near Durga Sthan when we heard loud cries. Rushing to the bank, we found it collapsed.”

State Minister Ramkripal Yadav expressed alarm over the incident, noting that Bihar’s flood vulnerabilities have intensified with each season. He assured that the state will allocate resources for rapid reconstruction and for safeguarding other vulnerable banks.

The situation remains fluid as water levels continue to climb. Authorities are keeping a close watch on villages in the Nagochhia block, issuing alerts, and coordinating relief distribution to affected families.
