Electric Vehicle Sales Surge as India Pushes Sustainable Transport

Modi pointed out that electric vehicle (EV) adoption has exploded in recent years. In 2014, annual EV sales hovered around 3,000 units. Last year, the figure jumped to approximately 2.5 million, reflecting an unprecedented growth curve.

The shift has been reinforced by initiatives such as FASTag, which reduces toll‑booth waiting times and cuts fuel wastage. Additionally, the expansion of metro networks—from fewer than 250 km in five cities in 2014 to over 1,000 km across more than 20 cities today—has positioned India among the world’s leading metro‑operating nations.
