Electoral Commission Emphasizes Media’s Role Ahead of Future Polls

In a landmark event on July 17, the Election Commission of India hosted its first All‑India Media Conference 2026 in New Delhi. More than 380 media professionals from all regions of the country attended to discuss how journalism can bolster democratic institutions during elections.

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar opened the session, noting that every Indian election is conducted under the Constitution, specific electoral statutes, and the Commission’s regular directives. He added that the whole election cycle is audited simultaneously by various stakeholders to preserve integrity.

Kumar highlighted the sheer scale of the electoral roll, which now comprises roughly 950 million names. He underscored that more than 1.2 million Booth Level Officers and 1.5 million Booth Level Agents function as parallel auditors, ensuring that the roll is continuously refreshed and verified.

The commissioner lauded the exceptional voter turnout in the latest assembly contests, describing it as proof of citizens’ confidence in the electoral system and a sign of India’s democratic vigor. He thanked all voters for taking part in the Special Intensive Review (SIR) process, which adds an extra layer of verification to the counting phase.
