The Bankipur assembly by‑poll, held on July 30, turned contentious when Jan Suraj leader Prashant Kishore alleged that the administration was acting as a de‑facto political player. Kishore reported that police had been rounding up Jan Suraj volunteers from their residences after dark, detaining more than thirty members, and preventing the party from setting up help desks. He contrasted this with the lack of any action against local BJP cadres. Kishore appealed to the Election Commission for a transparent and fair voting process and criticized the administration for violating the Model Code of Conduct by favoring one party over another.
