Election Commission’s Credibility Challenged as Govt Leverages Trump’s Praise

New Delhi – The opposition coalition has accused the ruling party of exploiting former U.S. President Donald Trump’s favorable comments on India’s voting mechanisms to shield the Election Commission from criticism. Congress mouthpiece Surendra Rajpoot contended that the Commission, once celebrated worldwide, now faces intense scrutiny after the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the BJP’s tenure.

Rajpoot asserted that the government’s amplification of Trump’s statement is a strategic move to counter accusations of bias and procedural lapses. He described the approach as a “shameful” attempt to deflect domestic concerns.

Samajwadi Party spokesperson Ashutosh Verma added that Kumar’s query to Trump about the feasibility of large‑scale elections without photo‑ID reflects a misplaced focus. Verma emphasized that the real debate should centre on why America’s democratic institutions have avoided similar criticisms, while India’s electorate expresses skepticism.
