In a heart-wrenching accident in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district, eight members of one family perished after entering the Thatte Hakkalu river to gather shellfish. Seven of the deceased were women, amplifying the sense of loss felt across the region. Eyewitnesses recounted how the group was suddenly caught by a powerful current, leaving several struggling for survival. Emergency services and local volunteers responded swiftly, pulling some survivors to safety and transporting them to medical facilities. President Droupadi Murmu took to social media to mourn the victims and offer sympathies to grieving relatives. She also wished quick recovery for those who sustained injuries during the mishap. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced immediate financial assistance of ₹5 lakh per family. During his visit, he expressed anguish over the tragedy and prayed that the departed souls find eternal peace. Police sources indicate the victims hailed from the Shirali area. Rescue operations are ongoing as authorities fear the death toll may rise if more bodies are recovered from the river.
