Eight Alleged Perpetrators Targeted CPI(M) Officials Over Housing Scheme Dispute

In Kallakurichi district, CPI(M) leaders were attacked on August 21 as they moved toward Ulundurpet for a scheduled protest. The victims – district secretary D.M. Jayashankar, former district secretary D. Ezhumalai, committee member D.S. Mohan and their driver – were confronted by a group of eight men.

The confrontation happened after the leaders parked their vehicle near Kilaiur and were intercepted at Vadamangalam. The attackers broke the car windows, trampled the party banner and used offensive language aimed at the officials.

The party condemned the incident as a “premeditated lethal assault” and demanded that law‑enforcement agencies imprison all eight assailants. CPI(M) tied the attack to a local agitation over the Prime Minister Housing Scheme, claiming that a former village council president had collected money from residents for the construction of 22 houses but failed to deliver the promised dwellings.

The statement further alleged that the former president’s two sons were part of the attacking group. A formal complaint has been lodged at Kalamaladur police station. So far, only one individual has been arrested, while the wounded leaders have recovered in hospital and returned home.
