Education department surveys flood‑damaged schools ahead of post‑Independence Day reopening

Assam’s education minister led a rapid survey of schools that were inundated during the recent floods. The assessment focuses on the extent of water damage, mud accumulation and structural cracks that need immediate attention.

More than 150 schools across Shivsgar, Najira and CharaiDev are still classified as either fully submerged or severely compromised.

The department has deployed crews to remove sludge, repair broken windows, and restore electricity and sanitation facilities.

Reopening plans will be finalized after the work is verified to meet safety standards, with a target to resume teaching after August 15.

The effort forms part of a broader disaster‑recovery strategy aimed at minimizing disruption to students’ academic year.
