From Dumraon to the Taj Mahal: Bismillah Khan’s Musical Journey

Born in the small town of Dumraon, Bismillah Khan’s early life was steeped in court music. His father, Paigambar Khan, served as a shehnai player for the Maharaja, and young Bismillah absorbed the sounds of royal ceremonies. At six, he traveled to Varanasi, where his uncle Ali Baksh, a celebrated shehnai exponent at Kashi Vishwanath Temple, became his guru.

Under rigorous training, Khan developed a command over breath control, fingering, and improvisation. By the late 1930s, his reputation grew, culminating in a landmark performance at the All India Music Conference in Kolkata.

The post‑independence era saw him playing for national milestones: a Red Fort recital for Prime Minister Nehru, the inaugural Republic Day ceremony in 1950, and televised Independence Day concerts that reached every Indian household.

His later years were marked by global tours, taking the shehnai from the Taj Mahal’s courtyard to concert halls in Europe, North America, and the Middle East. Even as he received honors such as the Padma Vibhushan and Bharat Ratna, his lifestyle remained modest, reflecting the humility that defined his music.
