Dr Balbir Singh Highlights Digital Risks and Substance Abuse at Marathon
During the post‑race press briefing, Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh raised concerns about two growing threats to children: online gaming addiction and cyber‑crime. He warned that increased screen time can lead to mental stress, social isolation, and, in extreme cases, children leaving home without parental knowledge.
The minister called for a coordinated effort among parents, teachers and community groups to steer youngsters toward constructive activities such as sports, cultural programs and skill‑building workshops. He stressed that merely restricting harmful content is insufficient; providing attractive alternatives is the key to safeguarding the next generation.
In addition, Dr. Singh highlighted Punjab’s struggle with substance abuse, noting that early engagement in sports and education can dramatically reduce the likelihood of youth turning to drugs or other vices.
