DK Shivakumar Signals Fight Over Monsoon‑Shortfall Water Order
Facing what he described as a “dry monsoon,” Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced on Wednesday that the state will challenge the decree compelling Tamil Nadu to release Cauvery water. He warned that the rain‑god Varuna has not blessed Karnataka this year, leaving farms and towns in a precarious position.
Shivakumar revealed that the water‑resource minister, senior officials and the advocate general have already explored every judicial remedy. The Cauvery Water Regulation Authority (CWRA) had previously turned down Tamil Nadu’s request twice, but this time issued an order for a daily discharge of 3,500 cusecs for 15 days, amounting to about 4,000 million cubic feet.
The state’s legal team is preparing either a petition to the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) or a direct plea to the Supreme Court for swift relief. The chief minister also said he will meet leaders of opposition parties in Bengaluru to devise a collective strategy.
He further reiterated his support for opposition comments on the Delhi police firing incident, urging the Union Home Minister to provide a clear account of the events.
