District Admin Says Bridge Safe, Begins Repair of Access Road
The district administration of Dehradun has assured citizens that the recently opened bridge over the Tons River remains structurally sound despite the recent heavy rains. Collector Ashish Chauhan clarified that only the approach road suffered erosion, forming a sizeable pothole that halted vehicular movement.
A 24‑hour control room was activated immediately after the incident, and extra engineering teams were dispatched to oversee the repair work. "The bridge itself is fully secure; we are only fixing the road that leads to it," the collector said during a briefing.
Local opposition leader Sangram Singh Pundir, however, accused the authorities of downplaying the severity of the damage. He called for a comprehensive CBI investigation into the construction practices and urged the Public Works Department minister, Satpal Maharaj, to take responsibility for the alleged lapses. Residents have also voiced frustration, noting that the blocked road is a vital link for several schools and colleges in the area.
