Digital Protection Initiative Targets Online Threats to Girls, Students in Gujarat
Gandhinagar, July 2 – The Gujarat Police rolled out a comprehensive 28‑day operation, “Operation Safe Cyberspace,” aimed at fortifying the digital environment for women and children. Leveraging technology‑driven policing, heightened cyber‑awareness, victim‑centred assistance and coordinated enforcement, the campaign seeks to diminish online risk factors.
Scheduled from July 1 to July 28, the programme blends intelligence‑based policing with community participation and preventative strategies to craft a secure online sphere. Officials highlighted the goal of ensuring women and children experience the same level of safety online as they do in public venues, with early interventions and prompt police action reducing cyber‑crime exposure.
Additional Director General of Police, CID Crime (Women Cell) Ajay Choudhary noted that the effort focuses on reinforcing public safety within the digital ecosystem for groups that are becoming increasingly vulnerable to cyber offences.
Key objectives include identifying potential victims, validating cyber‑crime alerts, providing counselling to at‑risk individuals, and offering immediate reporting through the national cyber‑helpline. Rapid registration and investigation of offenses are also central to the plan.
The initiative stresses ground‑level verification, victim outreach, and the use of cyber‑intelligence and analytical tools to detect threats early and prevent escalation. Collaboration with banks, telecom operators, educational institutions, resident welfare associations, NGOs and community leaders will enhance awareness and preventive measures.
Clear responsibilities, monitoring mechanisms and performance indicators have been laid out for field officers, prioritising prevention, early intervention and swift response.
Implementation will be led by SHE teams and specialised cyber‑crime police stations through awareness programmes, community interaction and targeted interventions. The aim is to equip women, children, parents, students and schools with the knowledge to recognise online hazards and adopt safe digital practices.
The campaign adopts the tagline “Safety through awareness, investigation through technology, action through law, and a secure Gujarat through public participation.” Goals include educating 2.5 million citizens about cyber safety, motivating 2 million students to take a cyber‑security oath, organising programmes in 10,000 schools and 1,500 colleges, and reaching 100,000 teenage girls with sessions on cyber‑stalking, online harassment, digital privacy and safe internet usage. Additionally, 5,000 parent‑awareness workshops are planned, and the police have committed to initiating action within 24 hours of any complaint concerning women or children.
