Digital procurement platform boosts MSME, women entrepreneurs

India’s Government e-Marketplace (GeM) is emerging as a pivotal tool for empowering micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and women‑led businesses in the public procurement space.

The portal now lists over 12.28 lakh MSMEs, with more than 2.25 lakh of those owned or operated by women. In addition, a vibrant startup community of 42,000 participants contributes cutting‑edge solutions across a broad spectrum of categories.

Officials say that GeM’s digital framework ensures transparent bidding, fosters healthy competition, and leads to better value for government spenders. The platform’s end‑to‑end digital workflow cuts procurement cycles and heightens accountability.

GeM’s inclusive approach aligns with national initiatives such as "Vocal for Local" and "Make in India", encouraging domestic manufacturing and local sourcing. Since its inception in 2016, the system has connected more than 1.37 lakh governmental buying agencies with roughly 2.5 million sellers, providing access to over 10,660 product lines and 350 service categories.

Future plans include leveraging artificial intelligence and broader stakeholder engagement to make GeM even smarter, further enhancing transparency, efficiency, and good governance.
