Diesel Demand Rises 6.5% in August as Transport and Agriculture Activity Grows

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas reported that diesel intake during August reached 7.00 million tonnes, up from 6.58 million tonnes recorded in August 2023 – a 6.46 percent jump. The increase is attributed to higher freight traffic on the expanding highway grid and a larger fleet of diesel‑powered tractors.

Enhanced road connectivity has enabled quicker movement of goods, prompting logistics firms to run more diesel trucks. Meanwhile, the agricultural sector, still heavily dependent on diesel for tractors and irrigation pumps, saw a boost in usage because of a below‑average monsoon that compelled farmers to pump water for longer durations.

The combined effect of transport growth and farm‑level fuel needs has lifted diesel demand, underscoring a broader acceleration in India’s economic engine.
