Dewas Accident: Car Crushes Three, Including 80-Year-Old

Three people, including an 80-year-old man, lost their lives on Sunday when a speeding car crashed into a group of people near a road in Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh.

The incident happened near Dad village, within the Udaynagar police station limits, at about 11 am. Officials said the car lost control abruptly and struck two women who were standing beside the road.

The vehicle did not stop there. It moved ahead and ran over Shankar, an elderly resident who was seated on a chair outside his home. The car finally came to rest after hitting a tree.

A woman died at the spot. The other woman and the elderly man were rushed to hospital, where they died during treatment. The victims were identified as Shankar, aged 80, Manibai, aged 40, and Jamunabai, aged 45. They belonged to the Devnalia-Junapani area.

According to available details, the car had been travelling from Indore's Race Course Road area. The people inside were reportedly going on a picnic to Udaynagar, and cooking utensils found in the car suggested as much.

The car also damaged three to four roadside electric poles before colliding with the tree. Residents took the injured to hospital, but doctors could not save them.

The driver, Dharmendra Jain, was injured too and has been admitted to hospital. Police detained him after a medical examination.

Additional Superintendent of Police HS Batham said the bodies were given to families after postmortem at the Bagli health centre. An accidental death case has been filed, and a detailed probe is underway into how the accident occurred and what caused the car to go out of control.
