Devotees Witness Kingly Decor of Mahakal in Ashes Offering

Ujjain’s sacred Mahakaleshwar Temple hosted a grand Bhasm Aarti on Tuesday, marking the Shukla Paksha Tritiya and Chaturthi of Bhadrapada. The ritual attracted a throng of worshippers who queued overnight to gain a direct view of Baba Mahakal’s divine manifestation.

The ceremony opened with the priest’s proclamation, followed by the ceremonial opening of the deity’s door amid the clamor of drums and conches. A sanctified Panchamrit bath – comprising milk, curd, clarified butter, honey and fruit juices – was poured over the idol, and a first bell signalled the consecrated Hariom water offering.

After a fragrant camphor aarti, the deity received a kingly crown. The Bhasm Aarti then unfolded with the resonant beats of drums, the shrill notes of shehnai and the rhythmic blowing of conch shells. Baba Mahakal was embellished with a Vaishnav tilak, a triple eye and a triple bindu, transforming the deity into a regal figure.

The chief priest led the concluding maha‑aarti, and the sanctum reverberated with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal”. Traditional attire was mandatory: men in dhoti‑sula and women in saris. The Great Aurora Akhada presented the ash offering, an act believed to render the previously formless deity visible to the gathered masses.
