Devotees Perform Ganga Dip and Prayers at Varanasi on Guru Purnima
The sacred banks of the Ganges in Varanasi turned into a sea of worshippers on the occasion of Guru Purnima, July 29. Thousands entered the water for a ritual bath, followed by collective worship, hymn singing and scriptural recitations. Law enforcement and rescue squads were stationed at strategic points to maintain order and assist anyone in need. According to senior priest Vibhushan Pandey, the full moon of the bright half of Ashadha is observed as Guru Purnima, honoring those who guide seekers out of darkness. Families bathed their young ones, invoking blessings for future learning, while also offering prayers at the iconic Baba Vishwanath shrine. Mahesh from Lucknow described the experience as a calming force that aligns the mind with positive vibrations. Amar Singh, travelling from Gorakhpur, emphasized the deep-rooted respect for gurus, noting that many engage in meditation and recollection of their teachers on this day. First‑timer Dinesh Chandra praised the smoother flow of believers, which allowed for a more focused and serene prayer session.
