Demands for Better Hostel Facilities Grow as IITT Students Rally

Students at the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Ranchi, have intensified their rally for improved hostel conditions following the death of first‑year student Aditya. The protesters, assembled at the Khelgaon Housing Society hostel complex, have unfurled banners calling for the ouster of Director Prof. Rajiv Srivastava and an overhaul of basic campus services.

Key grievances include inadequate food services in the mess, poor security in the hostels, malfunctioning CCTV cameras, unreliable lift operation, and insufficient emergency medical equipment such as ambulances and oxygen cylinders. Participants argue that the institution’s fee structure—approximately four lakh rupees per year—does not justify these deficiencies.

The Board of Governors’ chairman, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) A. K. Bhat, visited the protest site on Monday evening along with the director and senior faculty. While he listened attentively, he did not commit to immediate dismissal of the director, promising instead that a conclusive response would be delivered by Tuesday.

Police investigations into Aditya’s death remain ongoing, and the institute’s administration has expressed deep sorrow, seeking cooperation from students and staff to resolve the crisis.
