Delhi's Urban Flood Prevention Plan Nears Full Implementation

A comprehensive assessment of Delhi’s monsoon‑season measures was conducted by the DDMA on Monday. The meeting, chaired jointly by Deputy Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, examined the city’s readiness for heavy rain, urban flood control initiatives and the progress of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

Representatives from transport, home, fire, irrigation, flood control, MCD, NDMC, DDA, PWD and other senior officials were present. The data showed a sharp decline in flood‑prone points: 194 in 2024, 169 in 2025 and only 34 reported so far in 2026, with just eight locations still experiencing water‑logging.

All participating agencies confirmed that drain de‑siltation goals have been met. The MCD, irrigation & flood control department, NDMC and DDA report 100 % completion of their drain‑clearing programmes. The Public Works Department has finished about 95 % of its work, while the Delhi Jal Board has de‑silted 85.5 % of trunk sewers, 91.1 % of peripheral sewers and 90.16 % of branch sewers.

Chief Minister Gupta instructed that all excavated soil be removed promptly and warned that any uncovered drain, sewer line or manhole will trigger a zero‑tolerance response. The committee also prioritised the early identification and removal of potentially hazardous trees.

The session concluded with orders for mobile heavy‑duty pumps to remain on standby, swift handling of water‑logging complaints, continuous on‑ground surveillance and improved coordination with neighboring states. The SDRF is to be activated at full strength without delay.
