Delhi security crackdown criticised as MP demands removal of barricades and release of detained activists
CPI leader Sandosh Kumar P has raised serious concerns about the security apparatus in Delhi, where more than 47,000 personnel are reportedly deployed to control public movement. In his letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kumar alleges that barricades and police misconduct are preventing citizens from reaching Jantar Mantar, a venue traditionally used for peaceful protests.
The MP points out that women parliamentarians have also faced restrictions, describing the situation as akin to a state of emergency. He claims that activists have been arrested in locations over 1,000 kilometres away from Delhi and that trains heading to the capital have been cancelled to hinder their arrival.
Kumar warns that turning Delhi into a militarised zone will not silence dissent. He calls for the immediate removal of barricades, the reopening of Jantar Mantar and nearby metro stations, and an end to the practice of detaining protestors.
The letter underscores the constitutional right to assemble peacefully and urges the government to listen to democratic voices rather than suppress them through force.
