Delhi protest: 1984 massacre survivor slams Congress MP for praising jailed inmate

In a dramatic display of dissent, Nirpreet Kaur, a victim of the 1984 anti‑Sikh pogroms, posted a handwritten notice outside the home of Congress lawmaker Deependra Hooda on Friday. The message called the MP to account for describing the death of convicted rioter Sajjan Kumar as a national loss.

Kumar, who spent years behind bars for orchestrating violence after the 1984 assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, died in a Delhi medical facility on Thursday. Hooda’s statement that the death was an “irreplaceable loss for the political scenario” sparked condemnation from multiple quarters.

Kaur, who at 16 had watched a mob set a Gurdwara ablaze in Raj Nagar, recalled the horror and reiterated her call for remembrance of the 1984 victims. The SAD and relatives of those killed during the riots have joined the chorus, urging the Congress party to issue an apology and clarify its stance on the historic atrocity.
