Delhi Police Removal of Scholar Sparks Nationwide Political Outcry

New Delhi – On July 18, Delhi Police escorted education activist Sonam Wangchuk out of a hospital where he had been admitted, prompting swift condemnation from Congress and left‑leaning parties. The incident has been portrayed as an attempt to silence a prominent critic of the government.

Imran Pratapgarhi of the Congress emphasized that democratic principles guarantee every citizen the right to voice dissent peacefully. He lamented that the authorities chose to forcefully remove a protester who had been on a hunger strike for several days, calling the episode “deeply unfortunate.”

Congress spokesperson Surendra Rajput, speaking from Lucknow, accused the ruling party of crossing the line of insensitivity, alleging that the administration prefers police‑driven expulsions over dialogue with protestors and that students are being subjected to lathi‑charges.

Yogendra Yadav echoed this sentiment, branding the police action as “shameful, cowardly and illegal.” He assured that the youth will persist in their struggle and that the Parliament march planned for July 20 will go ahead despite attempts to deter it.

CPI(M) senior leader Vrinda Karat warned that the forced removal of Sonam Wangchuk could herald a shift toward authoritarian rule, suggesting that the operation was executed on the directions of the Home Minister and hinting at a potential nation‑wide hunger‑strike movement.
