Delhi LG Urges Young Planners to Build Cities for Future Generations

Delhi Lieutenant Governor TS Sandhu has called on young urban planners to recognise that the cities they design today will influence India's long-term progress. Speaking on Friday, he reaffirmed the message Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed during Amrit Kaal: planned cities alone will shape the country's future.

He was addressing a conference of young planners organised to observe World Habitat Day, World Cities Day and World Town Planning Day. He said that the decisions made by planners now will determine the economic opportunities, environmental health and living standards available to future generations.

The Lieutenant Governor emphasised that housing, mobility, environmental protection and access to public facilities should be considered together. A statement noted that India's urban transformation offers significant opportunities as well as serious challenges.

Cities are hubs of commerce, education, innovation and employment. They attract people seeking better lives and bring together talent, business and ideas. He cautioned, however, that rapid urbanisation places strain on land, housing, transport, water resources and public infrastructure.

According to TS Sandhu, the role of urban planning is to encourage development while managing growth in a way that protects communities and the interests of future generations.

Earlier, he had urged students of Delhi Police Public School to chase ambitious goals with discipline and a sense of social responsibility.

In a post on X, TS Sandhu said he addressed students, parents and teachers at a felicitation ceremony at Delhi Police Public School, Safdarjung Enclave, where Anurag Kumar and senior police officers were also present. He said he also interacted with them during the event.

He reminded students that exam results do not define their potential and encouraged them to think freely, remain curious, use technology responsibly and recognise their abilities. Inspired by the Prime Minister's call to dream big, he urged them to accept setbacks, pursue challenging objectives and uphold character, discipline and social responsibility.

On Thursday, he also reviewed the second phase of reforms being carried out in the city to lighten the compliance load on ordinary citizens and make it easier to do business through regulatory relief.

In a post on X, he said he chaired a review of the second phase of deregulation and compliance reduction in Delhi, which builds on the Prime Minister's vision of ease of doing business and ease of living.

He said he reviewed major reforms and called for the swift passage of the Delhi Ease of Doing Business Bill, 2026. He said the bill would adopt a 'permitted unless prohibited' framework to cut red tape and support quick, transparent and citizen-centric governance.
