Delhi Government’s Vidya Vahini to Provide Free Bicycles for Thousands of Schoolgirls

In a bid to strengthen female education, Delhi’s government introduced Vidya Vahini, a scheme that will distribute free bicycles to girl students in Class 9 attending government schools. The scheme was unveiled by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at a ceremony held at the Sports Complex in East Vinod Nagar.

The first tranche will see 3,000 bicycles handed to eligible students, with a target of reaching about 1.4 lakh girls across the National Capital Territory within a month through phased roll‑out. The bicycles are intended to mitigate travel hardships, especially for students who cover long distances on foot or rely on expensive public transport.

Speaking on X, the chief minister remarked that the initiative “offers a tangible solution to the challenges faced by our daughters, turning each morning into a journey of hope and empowerment.” The distribution aims to improve punctuality, reduce absenteeism, and lower the transport expenses borne by families.

Education officials stress that the programme aligns with broader objectives of gender parity and inclusive growth, ensuring that no girl is forced to abandon her studies due to logistical or financial constraints. The government expects the free‑bike model to inspire similar interventions nationwide.
