Delhi education department urges school hygiene amid flu surge

The Delhi Directorate of Education has asked all recognised schools to step up hygiene practices after a rise in swine‑flu cases in the city.

Key recommendations include reinforcing respiratory etiquette—covering the nose and mouth while coughing or sneezing, using tissues properly, and washing hands with soap and water before eating and after any cough.

Education Minister Atishi urged residents not to panic, stressing that accurate information and responsible prevention are vital, particularly within school settings.

Schools are to follow the “Healthy School – Healthy Community” approach, promoting regular hand hygiene, adequate ventilation, and routine cleaning of classrooms, common areas and frequently touched surfaces.

Maintaining a safe distance from anyone showing flu‑like symptoms is advised, and mask usage is permitted when required.

Additional measures call for anti‑spitting awareness, encouraging students and staff to drink enough water, eat nutritious food, get sufficient rest, and keep personal hygiene in check. Staff are reminded to avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth repeatedly.

The DOE warned against taking antibiotics or other medicines without a doctor's prescription. The advisory should be communicated through morning assemblies, notice boards, parent‑teacher interactions and digital channels.

All district education officers must monitor adherence and forward a compliance report by 31 August. Minister Ashish Sood reiterated that there is no emergency, but prevention remains the best defence during the seasonal flu period.
