Committee Formed to Review Student Housing Policies in Delhi

Delhi’s government has set up a dedicated committee to examine and revamp student housing policies after the deadly Satyaniketan building collapse. The committee, chaired by Urban Development Minister Ashish Sudan, will scrutinise existing PG regulations, assess the feasibility of allocating vacant Delhi Development Authority (DDA) units for student accommodation, and recommend upgrades to safety standards.

During a joint review session chaired by Lieutenant Governor Tarandeep Singh Sandhu, officials highlighted the need for a systematic structural audit of all PG establishments, stricter enforcement of building codes, and better coordination among the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), DDA and university administrations.

The chief minister, Rekha Gupta, announced that the audit results will drive policy changes aimed at providing secure, affordable housing for the city’s growing student population. She also ordered the suspension of five senior MCD officers tied to the collapse and launched a crackdown on illegal fifth‑storey structures across Delhi.

Senior officials, including Chief Secretary Rajiv Verma, NDRO Director General Piyush Anand and Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar, attended the meeting, signalling a unified governmental approach to resolve both immediate safety concerns and long‑term housing shortages.
