Delhi protest by thousands of cleaners continues after alleged police intimidation

Since the night of August 16, more than a thousand sanitation employees have been occupying a public space in Delhi, demanding accountability for the killing of a colleague. The protest, organized by AAP activists, has intensified after claims that police officials attempted to intimidate the victim’s relatives.

Party leaders say the Deputy Commissioner of East District was absent when they sought clarification about the detention of party legislator Kuldeep Kumar, who was reportedly taken into custody and had his residence video‑recorded. The AAP claims this action is linked to the broader attempt to silence voices raising concerns about the death.

Demonstrators have repeatedly asked the police to cease any pressure on the bereaved family, insisting that the burial must be scheduled only after the family’s approval. They argue that forcing a funeral without consent disrespects both the family's dignity and the legal rights of the deceased.

The AAP has urged the Delhi government to expedite a fair forensic examination, release the detained legislator, and grant the compensation demanded by the grieving relatives. Their statements emphasize that any attempt to suppress the protest could damage democratic institutions and the rights of marginalized workers.
