Delhi BJP Accuses AAP, Communists of Using Wangchuk Case to Stoke Youth Unrest

Delhi’s Bharatiya Janata Party media head Praveen Shankar Kapoor told reporters on Sunday that the AAP and Communist parties are deliberately trying to exploit the recent transfer of activist Sonam Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital in order to agitate young people. The spokesperson reminded listeners that the move was ordered by the Delhi High Court.

He said both opposition blocs appear “agitated” and have mobilised a combined workforce of between 1,200 and 1,500 supporters to protest at Jantar Mantar after Wangchuk’s removal on Saturday.

Kapoor claimed that typical visitors to the site consist of 500‑700 middle‑aged JNU hostel occupants or a crowd of 250‑300 less‑educated youths, none of whom are linked to competitive examinations such as NEET.

He further alleged that the conduct of AAP‑ and left‑aligned activists towards mainstream journalists at a Saturday gathering reflected their frustration over a stalled campaign.

Earlier, BJP state chief Harsh Malhotra pointed out that senior lawyers, including Kapil Sibal and Vivek Tanhka, filed for interim relief in the High Court, suggesting that Wangchuk is being treated as a political pawn rather than an ordinary activist.

The police’s action to shift Wangchuk to the hospital was described as consistent with the court’s order, which explains why the High Court denied any interim stay. Malhotra also referenced a June 28 protest organised by AAP, communists and the Congress, where Wangchuk joined a hunger strike despite the NEET re‑examination having been completed on June 21.
