Delhi Hospitalised Activist Calls Off Fast, Cites Government Assurance

Sonam Wangchuk, who had been under medical care at Safdarjung and later Medanta hospitals, ended her 26‑day hunger strike at Jantar Mantar on the night of July 24. The activist said her decision was conditioned on assurances received during a closed‑door meeting with Union Minister JP Nadda and Health Minister Dr Jitendra Singh.

In a statement on X, Wangchuk highlighted that 65 members of parliament had reached out to her, either personally or through written appeals, emphasizing the need to avoid any communal tension. She assured the public that she would soon release a video outlining the precise terms of the agreement.

The development follows a video message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who outlined a forthcoming cabinet draft that proposes fast‑track courts and tougher penalties for anyone involved in leaking NEET papers. The draft is expected to be tabled in the cabinet meeting scheduled for Friday.
