Defiant TMC legislator Madan Mitra served notice to pay damages and apologise
The Trinamool Congress hierarchy has taken legal action against one of its own. Madan Mitra, a sitting MLA who has been identified as a party rebel, received a formal notice from Abhishek Banerjee’s counsel on Tuesday. The notice accuses Mitra of disseminating false and harmful statements about the Diamond Harbour MP, causing reputational harm.
Banerjee’s lawyer, Shrobana Sen Gupta, instructed Mitra to compensate the affected MP with Rs 10 crore, to be held in a trust that will back anti‑defection cases and assist victims of alleged political violence linked to spurious criminal allegations. The notice sets a three‑day deadline for payment and demands a public apology in both written form and video, addressing the slurs made on a live broadcast dated July 19, 2026.
The document reaffirms that the plaintiff retains all legal remedies and that any response to the notice will not be construed as a relinquishment of rights. Delivery of the notice was confirmed through the email addresses associated with Mitra’s verified Facebook profile and via India Post’s Speed Post service, as per his Form 26 filing with the Election Commission.
