Debate Intensifies Over Bengaluru’s Five Police Commissionerates Proposal

The Karnataka administration’s draft to reorganize Bengaluru’s police force into five distinct commissionerates has triggered a sharp political duel. Home Minister Priyank Kharge asserted that the existing police jurisdiction already stretches beyond the limits of the Greater Bengaluru Authority, necessitating a structural overhaul to match the city’s swift expansion. The envisioned model places a Chief Police Commissioner at the helm, supervising five zones named Central, North, South, East and West, while also renaming the current police chief and adding several new posts.

BJP spokesperson R. Ashok labeled the scheme a financially driven partition, warning that it could hamper policing efficiency. Citing concerns from senior police officials, Ashok argued that the division offers no clear advantage to residents and demanded transparency on the cost and implementation timeline. He also pressed the government for documentation on renovation works at ministerial residences, signalling possible street‑level protest if his demands are ignored. The clash reflects broader tensions over governance reforms, budget constraints and the quest for effective urban policing.
