Erravalli Dalit Farmers’ Notice Sparks Political Debate in Telangana

A notice issued to 120 Dalit farmers in the village of Erravalli has ignited a heated political discussion in Telangana. The notice, sent by revenue officials, asks the farmers to appear with all land‑ownership documents, prompting concerns of a possible land seizure.

The demand coincides with Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao’s recent announcement that an investigation will be launched into a farm house allegedly owned by former chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao. The property is claimed to cover 700 acres, including 388 acres of government land.

Revenue Minister Ponguluri Shrinivas Reddy responded swiftly, stating that the verification process is a standard administrative task aimed at updating land records and resolving disputes, not an attempt to take away land from Dalits or tribal communities.

"There is no intention to acquire your land. The government’s policy remains focused on protecting the rights of the marginalized," Reddy told the media. He accused certain political factions of exploiting the situation to create a climate of fear among Dalits for electoral advantage.

Opposition leaders, however, have seized on the notice to allege that the ruling party is attempting to appropriate Dalit land under the guise of a revenue survey. They called for an immediate withdrawal of the notices and a transparent inquiry into the alleged farm house.

The incident has revived memories of past land‑reform initiatives carried out by Congress governments, which allocated roughly 2.5 million acres to landless Dalits and granted around 200,000 acres of ‘Podu’ forest land to tribal groups for traditional cultivation.

As the controversy unfolds, both the government and opposition are urging citizens to await factual findings rather than be swayed by political rhetoric. The revenue ministry has promised that every step taken will comply with legal norms and will be communicated openly to the public.
